Considering Transportation Methods
It is quite a distance from the south end of Samandour Kingdom to the western end of the continent. If I’m being honest, I want to teleport back, but there’s too many of us so that’s not possible.
Taking this into consideration, I’d have liked to establish a Gate, but it would be better if I’m a little bit more prudent in having a base at Samandour Kingdom.
When I questioned Fluna-san in detail, there were several more groups of mermaids living in the southern area of the ocean. However, they have no interaction with Fluna-san’s group and were apparently large groups. Still, any group would be troubled by the brutal activity of monsters.
「Aren’t there large ships that wouldn’t lose to monsters?」
「In Samandour Kingdom, there appear to be small trading ships that go to a small continent in the south where Devils(Mazoku) live.」
As expected, Sophia is well informed. The three countries in this continent that face the ocean are Samandour Kingdom, Gnomstoll Kingdom, and Yggurle Kingdom. However, the seaside of Gnomstoll Kingdom is a sheer cliff face with no port. Yggurle Kingdom faces the northern sea, but as it could barely be used for salt-making, it isn’t a terrain that was suited for a port. In this continent, only Samandour Kingdom’s southern seas had several ports and their trade with the continent of the Devils (Mazoku) is said to be profitable.
「If I’m not mistaken, the seas to the west of the Sanctuary seems like a place that could be a port, right?」
「Yes, there should be a bay with deep waters on the southwest side.」
If I remember right, there’s a spot south of the place I think could be for salt-making that looked like it could be used for a port. If it were before the Sanctuary was made, it couldn’t become a port because of the monsters, but since it’s inside the barrier now, it might be alright to make a port with a shipbuilding dock.
「Can’t we make a ship that wouldn’t lose to monsters?」
「………aside from Sea Serpents, the ocean is inhabited by large monsters like Krakens and Sea Dragons. As such, I think the performance we’re looking for is different from Samandour Kingdom who has been operating ships by continuously searching for routes with few monsters for many years.
There are apparently large ships called a Magic Propelled Ships in this world. However, it was an immensely large amount for one company to purchase, and in Samandour Kingdom, they have a system of joint investment by utilizing the country’s subsidiary aid.
I observed the mermaids huddling together inside the space expanded carriage. Should we set up a base in Samandour Kingdom? Or should we make a magic ship ourselves? I couldn’t decide.
It looks like if I use short warp several times over then rest when my magic power dries up, our journey back to the Sanctuary would take half the time.
「Should I try consulting Gnome and Salamander about ship building?」
「Indeed. The Sanctuary’s southern mine is under the control of Gnome-sama. It would be good to ask about what ores could be mined.」
Entrusting the driving to Sophia, I was dead tired inside the carriage. As expected, transporting a carriage filled with this many people is tough, despite only being short distances.
And using the time to recover my magic power, I think about structure and propulsion mechanism of a ship. This world’s magic ships use the concept of blowing wind magic into the affixed sail as the propulsive power. Screw propellers haven’t been invented. It would be great if I could make a controllable screw propeller, but in this world, the propulsion mechanism is a turbine, similar to the gas turbine engine of the Aegis-class cruisers, that uses magic………….
The ship’s armor can’t be average either. I think modern battleships were designed to defend against bombings and control damage by keeping injuries down. If I had to say, this world’s magic ships might be close to the heavy armored battleships of the Pacific War (1941-1945) era.
As I pondered over the ship’s structure and propulsion mechanism, it’s like I had already settled with building the ship, but I can’t help it, I always want to make something since I’m an artisan.
「The construction of large ships in the Sanctuary would intensify the countries’ aggression for it if they find out.」
「As I thought…………, the Sanctuary has Perception Inhibitor MD and the Great Spirits’ barrier, so they can’t infiltrate the Sanctuary, much less confirm what is inside, but that’s not possible for a large ship.」
「Indeed. I believe that the Perception Inhibitor MD is somewhat effective, but it would be difficult to conceal a large ship cutting through waves.」
「I know, right? But would it be enough for avoiding monsters?」
When we return, I’ll discuss and design the large ship with Laeva and Doganbo-san. Whether or not it would be possible to materialize it is something we’ll think about afterwards.
Since I’m saying we’d build a large combat vessel in this continent where battleships do not exist, it would be necessary to ask various people for advice. At any rate, I was wondering if I could build it because, while I’ve ridden ferry-type ships, I’ve only seen destroyers from afar, but I have a feeling that I could probably make it somehow, thanks to my rising level, growing status, and various skills groups.
I’m now looking forward to going back to the Sanctuary.
now that’s big project you’ve got there takumi.
I’m sure the ship he is making will break people’s common sense in that world, he gets help from a great spirit and he is the greatest alchemist as the title said after all.
Thanks for the chapter!
That “………” pause after Takumi asks just one question about shipbuilding. Sophia knows right then, with that one question, that something outrageous is going to happen.
Sophia is such a good woman…. I wish she had takumi first child… O.o
I vote for a submarine.
I vote for an Ekranoplan.
Ekranoplans are good because they do not touch water and water monsters are unlikely to attack them. And also because they’re fast. But they’re at least as complicated as an airplane (while hopefully carrying more cargo), so I recommend starting with a submarine.
Cheers for the chapter, and all your hard work!
Wonder why he jumped from thinking of a screw type propeller. Honestly a water jet type would be just as easy.
In a story, water jets of that magnitude are okay. But in real life ships, one the size of a modern frigate (no more destroyers) would have a huge jet stream that would ruin the sea bottom of harbors. The stream would also put undue force upon harbor pilings, harbor sea wall foundations, and channel mitigation devices (curtains, nets, underwater barriers). Another problem is that the ship would have problems with reverse propulsion as the jet is primarily for driving the ship forward. Military ships must have reverse propulsion, and some have variable or reversible propulsion applicable to just one… Read more »
Ok. Somebody warn Jin (Magi Craft Meister) he’s got some competition.
Until this MC learns to delegate production work to his golems, he isn’t much of a competition.
So, time to make a ship. I wonder what did the author think of when comparing the fantasy ships to the WWII era. Most ships in WWII went for the “all or nothing” method, but considering fantasy monsters might like to bite, not good. WWI standard… well those were really slow ships.
Thanks for the chapter! Awesome translation! God bless you!
Takumi over thinks things and makes a lot of assumptions in the context of modern Japan or a “worst case”. Just like he imagined Wedgefort holding off a swarm of 10,000 monsters and designed it for that. So when he thinks about a “large magic ship” that moves by “blowing wind against a fixed sail”, he thinks of an Aegis cruiser or the IJN Yamato with engines from a Boeing 747 blowing against a sail, then thinks it would be better to turn a propeller, then goes even further and thinks about modern thrust pods. Now, will he go with… Read more »
So now he can make battleships because he is “artisan”? What does levels has to with it? It’s advanced technology not magic sword. And as a previous salary man he sure as hell doesn’t know anything about them. I mean if it’s that simple, then maybe he can thinks about power plants, airplanes, computers etc and bring them to reality by the next month. A magic based internet in sanctuary wouldn’t be that bad either, whatever the hell that means. After all, he is an “artisan” and always wants to make something. Oh btw, he should also sell the magic… Read more »
He can’t introduce technology into the world such that there is an imbalance in power between those that have it and those that don’t. It’s clear the kingdoms and empires in this world are aggressive about expansion using force. Even the elven nobles use assassination for the purposes of acquisition. Any world changing technology should be shown to Norn first for approval because Norn still needs to be set free??? Spreading tech just makes the final fight harder.
Ok, but that’s not what I was saying though.
Well, the other part of what you were talking about with the knowledge magically appearing, that is “standard” with WN and LN type leveling up. No teacher is needed to learn anything, just levels. I am not a fan of that, but that type of reality (or plot protected convenience) is what WN and LN stories are built around. And of course, MC often ignore time constraints that other characters must obey simply because the author refuses to look at the clock or calendar of elapsed time. Even in this chapter, the author is ignoring logic by having the MC… Read more »
No he is artisan so he wants to build things. It just happens what caught his eye this time is a battleship, and levels not only increase his stats but the different levels such as jobs and skills give a positive correction for doing detailed work
Thanks for the treat, and stay safe. ?
That ship has to be built in a country that has land next to the ocean. The Sanctuary has land next to the ocean but isn’t affiliated with any country. Thus, that ship isn’t in any country registry, so it can be regarded as “outlaw” (outside the law) without the protection of any country’s possession laws. Well, the author probably won’t follow maritime laws anyways since this is a story. No country or kingdom is going to “nationalize” the Sanctuary’s unflagged ship just because it has no legal protections under any national treaties for the High Seas.
…This is starting to remind me of Nihonkoku Shoukan.
first… there you go creating more construction work for yourself.
second… ships? ships? are you idiot? there is magic, magic? why aren’t you thinking of making a flying ship?…
Probably due to the amount of magic it would take to keep it afloat once fully loaded made him pass by that idea
Una gran idea que tuvo y estoy seguro que se pasará de la raya xD, pero que pasó con los babosos disque héroes y el elfo cerdo anciano si se puede llamar elfo como dijo el rey elfo
Sanctuary? Ah sht here we go again
Come back as a slave
Make a submarine.
Thanks for the chapter!
… just sayin’… airship>ship
