Something That Isn’t A Monster
At a ghost town on the outskirts of the former Divine Empire of Sydnia. In front of the town’s church, monsters had formed a line.
Undead monsters like Skeletons and Ghouls, humanoid monsters such as Goblins, Orcs, and Ogres. A variety of Wolf-type, Snake-type, Lizard-type monsters. All these monsters were lined up orderly.
The scene of all these species of monsters just lined up without any fights breaking down was bizarre, but there was no one to witness and judge it to be as such.
This was a ghost town, after all.
Baal took a chunk of flesh from the Flesh Tree and bestowed it to the goblin at the front of the line.
Baal’s hand with the flesh sank deep into the goblin’s chest, and when he withdrew his hand, a change began to occur within the goblin.
The goblin’s body bulged and deformed in waves, and as it did, the goblin’s child-like physique grew two-fold, and two small horns protruded from its head.
「Hohoho, this is equivalent to roughly two evolutions.」
「Hmph, is it a monster that isn’t truly a monster? Well, it could serve the armed forces well.」
Agares and Buer assessed the evolution of the goblin.
「What a shame it can not be used on higher species of monsters.」
「Lord Baal, it can’t be helped. The higher species of monsters not only possess high intelligence, very few would follow others.」
Baal sighed as he looked at the queue of monsters in front of him.
They obey the ruling class of their species, but they generally do not listen otherwise. The only exception being in some cases where goblins obey orcs and ogres as underlings, but majority do not obey the rulers of others species.
「We are not human, but not monsters either, after all.」
「……that’s true. Mutated monsters gain intelligence and are more easily commanded. That should suffice.」
「Moreover, this goblin mutated to two evolutions. Greenhorn adventurers stand no chance against it.」
Now the size of the human, the goblin knelt before Baal in greeting, then left the abandoned church.
The goblin that evolved twice had the strength equivalent to a Goblin Knight. Considering how this can be reproduced, it wasn’t a bad result.
The next in line was a Skeleton, and Baal similarly embedded a chunk of flesh into it as well.
The Skeleton’s bones glowed and darkened.
「Hou, it’s roughly equal to a Skeleton Knight this time.」
「No, Agares. I think it’s a bit better than a Skeleton Knight.」
To Agares and Buer, witnessing Baal forcefully evolve monsters had piqued their interest.
That must have been influenced by the nature of the humans they had previously been. As proof of this, Gamigin, Malbas and even Gremory were not present. The two meatheads and the former harlot Gremory were all uninterested.
「Up next is a wolf monster? They’ve got fighting potential if they pack together.」
「Conversely, they have no strength if they don’t move as a pack.」
Agares and Buer watched expectantly as the wolf monster as it went through an extreme transformation.
Its flesh bulged and tore, and from its shoulders grow another another wolf head. Its stature grew twicefold and its fangs grew bigger and sharper.
「Ohh! It’s a success, Lord Baal!」
「Indeed. I can’t understand the rules of the transformation. The gap in strengths are too drastic.」
「Even monsters who were similar by nature have their individual differences.」
The monster that became a two-headed wolf seemed to have been enhanced greatly, so much so that Agares clapped in delight. On the other hand, Baal was had a more complicated reaction, unable to grasp a pattern in the enhancements.
「Next is the orc, huh……」
When Baal embedded the chunk of flesh into the orc, its body darkened and it grew one size larger.
「One level, I see.」
「Hmm, is it because its base abilities were high? Or is there perhaps another reason?」
It seems the Orc’s mutation was relatively minor. Agares and Buer seemed disappointed as well.
After that, Buer continued to implant chunks of flesh into one monster after the other.
「Phew, finally done.」
「Good work, Lord Baal.」
「With this, the strength of our forces has risen sharply.」
「Yes, there’s only a bit of flesh remaining. Gamigin and Marbas, strengthen our forces.」
「「Understood.」」
The Flesh Tree had greatly shrunk in size, and all that remained was reserved for Baal’s growth.
From near the center of the continent, the time until the uprising against humanity was only a little ways away……
