Fluna’s Talent
A beautiful, clear voice echoed throughout the passages of the gloomy dungeon.
「Yah!」
Fluna swung her sickle spear horizontally, quickly bringing it back to her side then followed up with a flurry of thrusts.
With a single horizontal swing, she decapitated a Kobold Soldier’s head, and the four remaining Kobold Soldiers immediately stopped in their tracks to avoid it. She attacked the unsteady Kobold Merchants mercilessly with consecutive thrusts, striking them in their throats and hearts, taking them down.
Fluna learned the Taijutsu skill relatively quickly, so I expected her to have some potential, but she was more gifted than I could imagine.
Firstly, perhaps because she was a mermaid, Fluna had a really strong lower half.
Swimming underwater at high speeds must surely require substantial strength. And that translates to leg strength in her human form as well.
When she performs a lunge using the spear, her steps were sharp and powerful.
That directly contributes to the spear’s overall destructive power.
That said, it didn’t mean that her arms were weak. It might seem like she doesn’t use her arms when she swims underwater, but she had to move with all that water resistance, so it only makes sense that she had high physical abilities.
The reasons they generally chose to run away from monsters was because sea monsters were enormous and they did not have weapons.
「It might be interesting to train the Mermaids.」
「Mhm, seems like it. If they had Master’s equipment, they could become strong warriors both at sea and on land.」
Kaede and I observed Fluna from behind as she fought.
As Fluna’s support, Berkut stood alert diagonally behind her, so Kaede and I were relatively carefree as we critiqued her fight.
Though, neither Kaede nor I neglected watching our surroundings.
The monsters that spawned in the middle floors of the dungeon were no problem for Fluna and Berkut together. They also had really good equipment, but Kaede and I nodded in admiration as we watched Fluna fully utilize her equipment.
Fluna’s level had risen considerably, and with Berkut, she was now capable of fighting in the middle floors without any danger, so I thought it was time that she train with a knife..
「Fluna, how about you try using the knife now?」
「Y-yes!」
Fluna stored the sickle spear into her magic bag that appeared as a bracelet, and took out the large knife and held it with both hands.
In addition to Berkut, Kaede also took turns to back up Fluna.
I watched attentively from the rear, kept an eye on everything and was prepared for surprise attacks.
Kaede, who used claws, would occasionally assist Fluna in fighting against superior species of Orc-type and Kobold-type monsters as she increase her combat skills and increase her level.
I think having a strong lower was greatly advantageous, no matter the weapon used.
And on top that, I feel as though Fluna, whether it’s specific only to her or if it’s because she’s a Mermaid, had exceptional eyesight.
Fluna kicked the face of an Assassin Wolf, a wolf-type monsters, from below, then drove a knife into its head as it recoiled upward.
It was then that the next Assassin Wolf attacked Fluna.
The Assassin Wolf was a monster that inhabited dark, dense forests and dark caverns, and as its name suggested, it was a wolf-type monster that excel in surprise attacks and ambushes.
This time too, one tried to sneak up on Fluna as she was focused on another wolf.
「Too slow!」
However, Berkut did not allow such an attack happen. With the tip of her spear, she slammed the wolf into the ground.
Gyan!
As the Assassin Wolf yelped from being slammed to the ground, Fluna plunged her knife deep into its head.
She swiftly withdrew her knife from the Assassin Wolf’s head, and dashed towards the Assassin Wolf that Kaede had trapped in her silk.
A short while later, Kaede returned to my side.
「Master, let’s take a break.」
「Okay. Okay, shall we move back a bit to a safe area and take a break?」
「Yup, I’ll call the two then.」
I took out some prepared tea from the Item Box then handed it over to Fluna and Berkut.
「「Thank you!」」
Perhaps exhausted, Fluna’s face was showing signs of fatigue.
「Fluna, are you tired?」
「……yes. I am somewhat exhausted.」
「It can’t be helped, Fluna. You’ve never fought monsters before, haven’t you? Moreover, even though we initially fought the weaker monsters, they’re still monsters from a high level dungeon. It’s only natural that it would tire you physically and mentally.」
「Yup, Fluna, you did your best.」
「Thank you very much, Takumi-sama, Kaede-chan.」
Even Kaede voiced her encouragements to Fluna, who seemed sheepish.
「Takumi-sama, should we head home for the day very soon? We can return tomorrow or the day after.」
「You have a point. Let’s go home then, shall we? Fluna, Berkut, you can stay at our place today.」
「「Yes!」」
I heeded Berkut’s suggestion and decided to head home for the day.
If the exhausted Fluna stayed over, she’d be able to focus on her recovery.
When I offered for Berkut to stay as well, the two responded so eagerly that it shocked me.
Did they want to stay over that much? Now that I think about it, I don’t recall Berkut having ever stayed over before.
Once we were done resting, we concluded our dungeon diving for the day and returned to the Sanctuary mansion.
It might be worth providing the Mermaids equipment and training them. I should discuss that with Fluna sometime.
Fluna’s talent was beyond expectations, it got me curious about the abilities of the other Mermaids.
