Scolding the Great Spirits
The day after the observation party visited the Sanctuary, I complained to Undine.
「That was unfair, Undine. I didn’t want the countries’ higher ups to know about me.」
「Oh, didn’t the people from Valkyra know anyway? Then wouldn’t it have only been a matter of time before the other countries knew even if I had stayed silent?」
My complaint didn’t concern Undine in the slightest. Sure, I knew that if I built the mansion at the heart of the Sanctuary, I would sooner or later be exposed, but I wanted to be excused from meeting the higher ups of the countries so suddenly. Because of that, King Lomaria learned what I look like, and Yggurle Kingdom’s Prime Minister was glaring at me or something. He definitely didn’t like the fact that Undine said that I was the Protector of the Spirit Tree and the Keeper of the Sanctuary. Should I leave the elf alone?
「Haa, Undine and Sylph are one thing, but I would have liked it if Dryas stopped them.」
I wanted Dryas, who seemed to be the one with common sense(?) among the Great Spirits, to stop Undine and Sylph, but………….
「Right, it might become a bit inconvenient outside the Sanctuary.」
「It might be slightly troublesome in Volton Town, but there would be no problem if you are in the Sanctuary, no?」
Just as Undine says, a surge of merchants and nobles coming to the mansion in Volton would be frightening. Moreover, I had only just recently been attacked by an assailant, and I have a feeling this would create more cause to target me.
Since that attack, with walks in Volton being a matter of course, Sophia positively never left my side, even when in the safety of the Sanctuary. Kaede had even strung up a thread barrier. And Titan is always on standby within the Subspace.
「Haa~ I’ll refrain from going out in Volton.」
「Isn’t that just perfect? I’d like to ask you to complete the construction of residences and facilities.」
「…………the Purifier MD and Toilet Purifier MD have completely been out of my own pockets though.」
「Don’t be so stingy. Takumi, you have a lot of money, don’t you?」
Undine proposed that it was the perfect time to complete the Sanctuary, and it looks like Sylph thinks that I will do anything out of the goodness of my heart. The Spirits are too free willed.
Protesting to Undine and the Great Spirits was like pushing against a curtain, a waste of effort and has no effect. And then, maybe because she thought I was pitiful, Dryas gave me a fascinating proposition.
「Now now, Takumi. In return for that, I will give something that Takumi desires.」
「Something I desire?」
「Yes, rice is probably this, isn’t it?」
A sheaf with a ripe ear of rice appeared from Dryas’ hand.
「Ah!! RICE!!」
「It will be equitable with this, wouldn’t it? You wanted this rice and soybeans, didn’t you? And “koji”[1], was it? That thing is necessary to make “miso” and “shoyu”(?), isn’t it? With my power, producing fermented food is easy, you know.」
「Hahaa~, Dryas-sama! I will work like a cart horse!」
Knowing that I could make the rice, shoyu, and miso that my heart desires, my spirits were as high as the heavens. I hadn’t known that Dryas governed over fermentation as well. Because I didn’t concern myself with the Dwarves’ alcohol brewing, I thought yeast wasn’t her area of expertise.
In this Sanctuary, Dryas’ power holds a large position in relation to food. Starting from the orchard, rare medicinal plants, grains, vegetables, and the like. The fields’ land and water were influenced by Gnome and Undine, while light and darkness were influenced by Selene and Nyx, so it isn’t just Dryas, but when it comes to food, Dryas’ blessings were exponentially higher. If rice, shoyu, and miso are produced here, I might not be able to disobey them anymore.
「Fufu, the working Elves have increased, as such, you may leave the rice and soybeans to them.」
「Thank you, Dryas.」
「Well then, dismissed.」
Just as the problem was solved, Undine and Sylph closed the conversation and left.
「Well, I guess it’s alright if there’s hope to make rice, shoyu, and miso.」
「Are rice(?), shoyu(?), and miso(?) that delicious?」
Sophia who had been refraining herself by my side the entire time asked in wonder. Seeing me in unusually high spirits at being able to reproduce Japanese food had perplexed her.
「To me, they’re comfort food.」
「Ah, I see, of course it would be.」
Elves likely also have their comfort food. She understood with my explanation.
Actually, I got the Mermaids to get Kombu (I think it’s kombu) and Iwashi (its taste is similar to iwashi too). The dashi issue has also been cleared.
Kombu and iwashi looks and tastes like the original so I called them that, but the people of this world don’t eat things like kombu and they only use small fish like iwashi as fertilizer.
I hadn’t been able to complain to Undine and Sylph properly, but, well, it’s fine.
Footnotes:
1. Koji explained here. If you are interested in other the ingredients, google-sensei can help~[↩]
2. I will probably switch around with the name of ingredients that are more common like soy sauce in the future. Products distinctly from Japan like miso and kombu will be kept with Japanese names.
Sphy’s Note: Thank you for patiently waiting! We’ve now started Volume 5, and finally, Takumi gets a reward for all he’s done for the Sanctuary~
Aaaaand the cliche Japanese addiction to rice, miso, and other stuff has reared its ugly head. Also, these great spirits are really starting to get on my nerves. They treat Takumi as a slave without remorse and just try to gloss over their faults. The moment they responded to “I can’t go to Volton for awhile” with “Great! Now you can spend more time slaving away for us” is when they crossed my tolerance limit. I hope Sydnia show up to give them a thrashing because they deserve it.
Yeah, I’m being to agree, I think that part of their plan is to make him the king of the sanctuary and by limiting his time outside they can make him stay their more and take charge of it.
Japanese novel cliches ive never enjoyed.
– the emasculated male lead.
– the dense male protag that wouldnt know what to do with a pair of breasts even when a pair slap him upside the head.
– chapter after chapter of food porn/ecstasy
Thankfully this novel has had few of those issues till recent chapters. But now we’re starting in on the tropes that plague just about every other novel that isnt ultra violent or basicly hentai with a story.
Add on to those tropes:
-chapter after chapter of crafting
-mofumofu obsession
These are basically in the same category as the food cliche and, while tolerable in small doses, they rarely ever contributes anything to the story and only serve to increase the wordcount.
as for me the ones that annoyed me the most is
Easy to generate word count is good for authors, right? If each printed book is roughly 255 pages and sells for 1280 yen, then authors need to publish as many books as they can each year to take advantage of interest and to build up enough total printed book sales to convince a production committee to make an anime which of course sells more books. https://www.amazon.co.jp/-/en/小狐丸-ebook/dp/B08NBD7MCQ/ As above, there are 8 printed books, and if the author gets $1 out of each 1280 yen sale, then that can be quite a bit of money when 8 books are concerned. So… Read more »
I knew the writing was on the wall for this one when they had him do the cliched “Seiza.”
Guess either the author was running out of ideas or maybe he thought it was time to dip into the cliche pool to increase the readership (which IMO was a steaming-pile-tier decision. People like this because of the relative LACK of those cliches).
I’m hoping the author pulls his head out of his ass, but I haven’t read ahead in the Japanese yet (kind of afraid to at this point), so I don’t know right now.
You forgot – Beta Male leashed Doggo to all the women around him trope too
as for me the one that annoyed me the most is the MC instead of the great spirit. he should get it straight. if he want to scold then scold, don’t just easily got swayed. it’s understandable that the great spirits are so selfish to their own convenience just like a child, I believe it’s because there’s no one that could really scold them properly for their entire life with how much power that they have and how they couldn’t interact freely outside of the sanctuary. it’s really not that surprising if they act like a child. but our MC… Read more »
Takumi is in an inferior position to the spirits, and in Japan, social hierarchy seems to be pretty important. He probably still has some resistance to scolding beings superior to him. That, and he’s cardboard. Once the author made him go googly eyed over the Japanese food he stopped being a person with any sort of agency. Takumi is no longer a character, but rather a plot device, meaning the fault of the situation falls on the spirits (and the author). Hating Takumi is like hating a rock because it didn’t resist when someone threw it.
Oh, come on. You know who the intended readers to those Japanese web novels are, don’t you?
In case you and others forget, let me remind you. ORIGINALLY, it is FOR THE JAPANESE, NOT FOR PEOPLE OF OTHER LANGUAGES. So why bother when it’s full of Japanese values and customes?
So i’m astonished there’re lots of people complaining about those things. If it bugs you so much, why don’t you just stop reading the entire Japanese web novel system?
This isn’t “full of Japanese values and customs.” These are just some lazy cliches that boost the word count while doing nothing for the story. I’m fine with foreign customs and values, but these tropes are the story equivalent of eating ice. It has volume, but nothing else. It is just bland and, while maybe acceptable in small doses, quickly gets boring.
Don’t try to take some condescending stance when you clearly don’t know what you are talking about.
Huh? If you know that much, then why bother? You know that it’s just a means to attract potential Japanese readers as well as upping the word count, then why must you feel so irritated? Why not just let it pass without paying it a second thought? Why not just say “Oh, again.” and forget about it right after? Isn’t it far better than going on rambling about what you already well understand; and you will CERTAINLY see it again aslog as you rad other Japnese novels. I’m shocked at how you act, not at what you don’t understand, you… Read more »
I’m irritated because, while I would normally avoid the novels that do that, there are a lot of cases where they get added part way through the series (like this one). One of the cardinal sins of writing is changing the genre part way through the series after the readers have already gotten invested. This is like a simple version of that. Also, it isn’t as simple as skipping the part I don’t like. Sometimes I do do a bit of skimming when those tropes pop up, but the way they were used in this chapter stood out in a… Read more »
Ok. You’ve got the point. So let’s just stop here.
My limit is close…
If I was brought to a world with no fried chicken, you can bet your ass I would jump on any opportunity to recreate it.
Comfort foods are important, it’s just that most Isekai are written in a widely medieval western style, making foods of Asian cultures rare.
Thanks for the treat.
I still think Takumi should go to the church to speak with the goddess and snitch on the great spirits and their doings.
Thanks for the chapter! Awesome translation! God bless you!
Except he can’t go to Volton right now due to… who was it again? Oh right, those very same spirits that he would tattle on. Your comment has opened my eyes and now I wonder if those nuisances are a bit more scheming than I initially thought.
I thought he was directed to build an immaculate church dedicated to Norn-sama. He seldom seeks her guidance or counsel as regularly as he should.
He might like what the goddess might say: i.e. all part of the plan.
It’s clear that the spirits were waiting for a catalyst of change because things were slowly spiraling downwards. Takumi is their best option since he’s somewhat willing and actually cares.
Yeah, I mean didn’t he build one next to his house? You’d think he would use it some time.
It seems that Norn has been forgotten. She received her alcohol in exchange for giving Takumi a hint on accelerating time inside a subspace. I’m surprised she hasn’t chastised the spirits yet.
Hasn’t received her alcohol.
Thanks for the chapters.
There’s no value to Takumi’s future kingship. He’s being pushed and tricked to it like a child by Great spirits.
thanks for the chapter ?
The spirits are displeased with the elves because the elves treat the spirits at tools. Spirits then proceed to treat the tool, I mean the MC, as a tool. K.
I’m not annoyed at them though. I’m annoyed at the MC. If you don’t like it don’t fking do it. He btches about being pushed around and having to do all this sht… Then dont do it. Simple. He can quite literally go anywhere and do anything he wants. He chooses this, then whines about it. It’s incredibly annoying.
Sorry, I like rice but rice isn’t that great
This spirits are annoying!
This… is a joke. Right? Hes ok with them controlling him… for rice? What the hell happened to this story? It went from riveting all the way up til he turned into the Spirit’s Workmule. Something needs to happen. Either norn reprimands the spirits or something.
Ever since this Sanctuary arc started, its been clichés, tropes and pretty much just filler in between.
Hope it improves soon
Takumi is so overworked that he is forgetting a lot of things. In this chapter, he forgot that he already had rice, miso, and shoyu. He bought rice in the royal capital of Valkyria and had Papeck special order it too. The use of miso and shoyu were casually mentioned previously. What is this “Spirit Sanctuary”, some kind of black company? Oh! Maybe that is it. I thought Author-san might be a secondary school student due to his lack of knowledge about a variety of things, so maybe this is during his 2nd year of middle school or 3rd year… Read more »
