Greatest Alchemist? Chapter 672

Mages’ Equipment

The Mage Corps HQ was built near the three Knight Order HQs on the outskirts of the Sanctuary.

For the interior and magic devices, I simply installed the minimum required toilets and lights.

Once it was completed to a satisfactory degree, I dropped by and greeted Sophia who was supervising the training of the knight candidates on my way back.

In the training grounds, young people holding wooden swords and shields while wearing simple training suits and helms were sparring under Sophia and Dante-san’s supervision.

They weren’t at a level to do mock battles just yet, but who prepared that equipment?

「Sophia, do you have a moment to spare?」
「Ah, Takumi-sama. Of course it’s fine.」

When I talked to Sophia about the mage corps, she approved of its founding.

I asked Sophia why her expression seemed a bit complicated, and she said had various bad encounters with the magic corps in her time at Yggurle Kingdom’s Chivalric Order.

「There was friction between the Chivalric Order, who mainly use swords, spears, or bows for ranged attack while only use magic for support, and the Mage Corps which were more like stationary artillery.」
「Umm, it’s okay for them to be a stationary artillery because the knights protect the front line?」
「That is so, but when they take being protected for granted……」
「Ahh………」

So there’s friction between knights and mages even among Elves.

「Mages who can only serve as stationary artillery are useless, aren’t they?」
「Yes. Mages who become nothing more than a burden once depleted of magic power are unnecessary.」

It would seem Sophia had some thoughts regarding the Mage Corps.

「Still, with the people permitted to live in the Sanctuary, the Knight Orders and Mage Corps should be able to cooperate and protect the Sanctuary together, right?」
「I don’t think that’d be a problem.」

At the very least, I trust Sylph, Selene and the others’ eyes.

「Then should we raise a group of warrior mages?」
「Warrior mage…… that has a nice ring to it. Not a stationary artillery, but rather, a mobile artillery that could at the very least defend themselves in close quarters combat…… how intriguing.」
「Yup, that’s exactly my ideal.」

Mages don’t need to be in the forefront of combat, but of course, it would be an issue if they expect to always be protected.

You have to be able to protect yourself.

「Then just a robe and staff wouldn’t cut it.」
「That’s right. Armor may be impossible, but we should at least consider some equipment that would provide a modicum of defense while being light and easy to move in.」

The standard equipment of adventuring mages was a robe, a pointed hat, and they carry a staff that assist in their spell casting.

Apparently, this equipment was similar to the ones used by the country’s mage corps as well.

「Actually, the equipment I gave to Berkut would be best, but the materials for that……」
「A long staff would be good. We can drill staff techniques into them, and train them so they can handle basic close combat.」
「How practical.」

Thankfully, we had plenty of Treants in stock, which was a splendid material for staves. Later on, we could inlay a magic crystal depending on their individual attributes. If we apply Hardening and Enhanced Durability enchantments, it should be able to withstand combat with a staff.

「How about sturdy boots and leather armor with weight reduction enchantments, and a mantle rather than a mage-like robe for the Mage Corps. Don’t you think it would be nice if they look kinda cool?」
「The Knight Order’s gear looks good, after all. I believe it would do well for the Mage Corps to maintain appearances as well. Additionally, we’re asking Kaede to create a surcoat for the knights.」
「A surcoat, huh. That’s part of a knight’s uniform.」
「It can’t be left like that. We must consult with Akane and Maria to decide on the surcoat’s color and design.」

As soon as it came to her, Sophia began making preparations to go back home to discuss the surcoat’s design.

「Father! I have some business that requires my attention, please carry on with the training!」
「Oi! Sophia! What’s the matter!?」

Even though Dante-san called out, Sophia was already rushing to leave.

「Has Sophia also taken an interest in fashion now? That makes me happy.」

She’s an unparalleled beauty, yet Sophia doesn’t care about what clothes she wears, but she showed interest in designing the surcoat. Perhaps this could be a chance for her to become even more stylish with her everyday clothes as well……

I later learned that being interested in weapons and armor was normal for knights.

So it wasn’t about fashion at all.
