Music Player

I’ve decided to build a music player at Sylph’s request.

I returned to the mansion and went right to my workshop.

「Now, how should I record the sound?」

I could make a magic device that records the wavelength of sounds as is, then pair it with another magic device that plays back that recorded sound by vibrating the diaphragm of the speaker.

No, rather than a diaphragm, maybe I should etch a magic formation inlaid with a magic crystal? But maybe it’s better to keep the original form of the speakers.

First, I’ll need a mic to capture the sound, an amp to amplify the sound waves, and a speaker to play those sound waves.
Since I don’t need to convert electric signals, the structure was simple.

「Time to make a prototype.」

The shape of the prototype was simple.

It’s a box that holds an audio recording magic crystal which is connected to an amp by a mithril alloy cord, and two simple speakers.

I once again placed my hand on the magic crystal, and channeled magic power into the playback magic formation.

I heard my speakers on both the left and right speakers.

It functions. All that’s left is to check the recording time.

The record playback magic crystal could be overwritten and saved as many times as one likes, and it can be swapped out like cassette tapes.

「Still, they have to record something. I wonder what Sylph plans to do with this.」

I adjusted the design of the prototypes of the microphone, amplifier, and speaker, but I couldn’t help but wonder what kind of music they would be recording with it.

It’s not like they could buy CDs or download it from the internet, after all.

They would actually need to make the recording to make a CD.

「Of course, but what music are you going to record?」
「Isn’t that obvious? That’s what the bands in the Sanctuary are for. Once they find out that they can save their own performances, they will happily oblige.」

Sylph had already reached out to the musicians.

The band members of the Sanctuary orchestra had a high percentage of elves. There were humans, dwarves, and mermaids as well, but the majority were the elves. On that note, the second highest were the mermaids.

What I meant by all this was that, if Sylph approached the elven musicians, they would definitely not refuse. This was a reflection of their deeply rooted faith in the Spirits.

「We’re going to record the performance in the music hall, yes?」
「Actually, I’d like to record each individual instrument, then mix them for balance, but there is no time for that. This will just be for the background music for skating, after all.」

The moment Sylph said that each part would be recorded separately, I had to suppress my shock. I don’t want to get dragged into such a tedious task.
Fortunately, Sylph was impatient.

「Okay, there’s no time to dillydally, Takumi. Bring the record magic device to the orchestra immediately.」
「Right now……?」

Apparently, the band members had already assembled in the music hall.
They were currently rehearsing, and Sylph told me to set up the recorder while they practiced.

Recording in the music hall turned out to be incredibly exhausting.

Sylph’s fussing was tolerable.
The real problem was on the band members’ side.
During the rehearsal, I recorded and played back their performance. When they realized that there would be a remnant of their performance, the band gave it their absolute all.

Well, their attention to every minute detail, they were relentless……

In the end, I had a late dinner by my lonesome.
